The Zombie
Marketing was key for this legendary drink. With a two-drink maximum, three different rums and 4 ounces of them, the Zombie was an infamous cocktail when it first debuted and still is today.
Invented in 1934 by Donn the Beachcomber, this drink really gained popularity during the 1939 World’s Fair (kinda wish they still did those). He kept the ingredients of some of his syrups so secretive that he’d just label the bartender’s bottles with a number.
Luckily for all of us, tiki cocktail historian and detective, Beachbum Berry did some digging to create an as-close-to-original recipe as he could.
THE ZOMBIE
1 1/2 oz CASK RUM
1 1/2 oz GOLD RUM
1 oz 151 DEMERARA RUM
1/2 oz FALERNUM
1 oz WHITE GRAPEFRUIT JUICE
3/4 oz LIME JUICE
1/3 oz CINNAMON SYRUP
1/4 oz GRENADINE
1/8 oz ABSINTHE
2 dash ANGOSTURA BITTERS
Shake ingredients with 1/2 cup of crushed ice until the shaker gets frosty. Pour into a large tiki mug or glass and top with more crushed ice. Garnish with a big sprig of mint and take it easy.
